There are numerous different dietary varieties that contain choline, a vital vitamin. Despite being a necessary nutrient, it is not frequently referred to as a vitamin. It offers the methyl groups the body needs for several metabolic processes. The body needs this vitamin, for instance, to make the phospholipids necessary for maintaining the structural integrity of cell membranes. Additionally, it is essential for the metabolism of fat and cholesterol, neurotransmission, the growth of the developing fetus's brain, and gene expression.

Sources of choline. Meat, liver, eggs, fish, milk, and dairy products all contain choline. It can also be found in cruciferous vegetables, potatoes, almonds, and whole grains (e.g., broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts). Lecithin, a typical food additive used as an emulsifying agent in processed foods like margarine and salad dressings, contains it.


Small amounts of choline can also be made by the body in the liver. To meet the needs of the body, however, this is insufficient.


Deficiency and prevention of choline. In healthy cultures, choline insufficiency is uncommon because the body can make some choline on its own. The following groups are more vulnerable to choline deficiency:


  • expecting mothers.

  • those patients who require intravenous nourishment.

  • individuals whose genetic makeup prevents choline from being metabolized normally.

Inadequate ingesting can result in neurological diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, muscular degeneration, and liver damage. A higher likelihood of childhood stunting has also been linked to deficiency. Choline deficiency can be avoided by taking choline supplements or consuming enough meals high in the mineral.
